48 Hours in Austin: 5 Moves for a First Weekend

Two days, one car, no wasted stops. This is the weekend we send visiting friends on: a swim, a barbecue line worth standing in, one night of live music, a look at the city from above, and the bats. Every stop links to its own listing with hours and a map, and you can save the whole thing to My plan.

What are we missing? Tell us your pick and, if it checks out, it goes in the guide. Send your pick →
1
Barton Springs Pool · Zilker & Barton Springs

Saturday morning, before it gets crowded. Three acres of spring water that stays near 68 degrees, in the middle of Zilker Park, open most of the year (it closes one weekday for cleaning, so check the day before you go). Bring a towel, pay the gate fee, swim a lap, then walk the park.

2
Terry Black's Barbecue · South Lamar & Bouldin

Lunch on Barton Springs Road, ten minutes from the pool, with a line that moves and no sellout gamble. Brisket, beef rib, and the sides are the reason locals pick it over the more famous line across town.

3
South Congress Avenue · South Congress

Saturday afternoon on foot: boots, vintage, bookstores, the postcard mural and a coffee at Jo's. Park once and walk the strip from Elizabeth Street to Oltorf.

4
Continental Club · South Congress

Saturday night. The South Congress club has run since 1955 and there is a show most nights, often with a free early set. Get there before the headliner and stand near the bar.

5
Mount Bonnell · West Austin & Lake Austin

Sunday, late afternoon. A hundred-step climb to the classic view over Lake Austin and the Hill Country, then back downtown for the Congress Avenue bats at dusk (March through early November).

How we checked: Details were checked against each place's own site on Sept 24, 2026. Hours and prices change, so confirm before you go. If something's off, tell us and we'll fix it.
